Doctor Prescribed 50000 Units Of Vitamin D
[acne] taking 50,000IU vitamin D pills prescribed by my primary care physician has gotten rid of my mild to moderate acne in less than 3 weeks of taking them. Has this happened to anyone else? (More in comments)

PSA to anyone reading this: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Your body has no easy way of getting rid of fat-soluble vitamins. This isn't a "take as much as you want, you'll pee out the excess" type like (most) other vitamins.
Please be aware of this. It's recommended to get a vitamin d blood test and discuss with a doctor before supplementing. Vitamin D excess IS rare but it does occur. Be safe!

My sister got really sick a few years ago, like emergency room sick, and it turned out to be because she was taking very high doses of both vitamin D and calcium and the combination is apparently bad news.

This is funny because my doctor explained this to me with the "you won't pee out the excess" point as a pro rather than a con, lol. I have a vit D deficiency and used to take a single giant prescription dose once monthly instead of a daily pill because the body is great at storing a reasonably large amount of vit D and I am bad at remembering to take daily pills. I now just take 7x the daily dose once a week. Definitely recommend talking to a doctor before loading yourself up with vitamins though!

This is a great point, Vitamin D toxicity is rare but it can happen. I take Vitamin D daily especially in the winter because my levels have been low before (northern climate). I do Vitamin D drops 1000 IUD and I do 5-6 drops per day. This may seem high but it was guided by my MD based off of my blood reports. Recent research on Vitamin D levels have shown that the daily recommended intake is quite underestimated and it 10,000 IUD could also be considered safe. However, it really depends on a person's individual needs. Vitamin D will also help you absorb calcium which is great for bone density. The flip side of this is that if you are anemic and needing to supplement boron, calcium will chelate iron absorption. If you need to take iron supplements, do it at least 2 hrs before ingesting anything with calcium and take it with Vitamin C to maximize absorption.

Same goes for vitamins A and E. You should only be taking supplements containing either if you're told to do so by a physician.

Yup. Often vitamin D tablets come compounded with calcium. My grandmother grew a tiny but an extremely painful stub along her big toe due to the a high dose of such a tablet. The body can start making painful calcified outgrowths if you take too much of Vit D and calcium.

When I had a test done that showed low vit D, I started taking a supplement. Then after a few months of regular supplementing, I got tested again and was in the recommended range for it. I have stuck to the dosage, but I guess I could get tested again some day, because i've swapped supplement brands based on availability.

I live in the PNW. Problem solved.

Yes.
K,A,D,E are all fat soluble.
Thank you for taking about this. I'm happy it is a top comment.
Just because something is good for you doesn't mean more is better.

Most people in North America at least are deficient. If they stick to 4000iu they likely won't have a problem.

I just want to say while MANY people are Vit D deficient and could use a daily multivitamin, DO NOT take this high a dose without talking to your doctor. Vitamins A,D,E & K are fat soluble (while most others are water soluble) so you can overdose on them because your body can't just pee out the excess

yeah i have severely deficient vitamin d (even less than OP--mine was at 3 last time i got tested) and i was told to take 5000 IUD once a day.

Is 5,000iu a high dose?
Edit: got oc'd with numbers without a ,

I find the mnemonic FAT DEK to help with remembering which ones are water-soluble and which are not lol.

Isn't this prescription only where you are though? When I was severely deficient I could only get it through a prescription
